  • l’apport de solutions aux défis sociétaux de l’énergie et du climat, en favorisant la transition vers une mobilité durable et l’émergence d’un mix énergétique plus diversifié ;

Simulation of bubble columns with a CFD two-fluid model

Bubble columns are a very classical technology of gas-liquid reactors, used in various fields such as biotechnology, water treatment, chemistry etc. Geometry is simple but the hydrodynamics can be very complex inside, especially at high gas superficial velocity. As a consequence, the scale up of this technology is quite difficult. In the other hand, CFD models are increasingly used in the chemical industry to predict multiphase flows and lower the risk associated with the design of industrial reactors. The global aim of this topic is to improve existing CFD models used in bubbly flows and bubble columns.

Description

Some recent experimental works at Ifpen have yielded new validation data that will be compared with a CFR RANS two-fluid model, also improved recently with a collaboration with a research group at polytechnic Milan.

The work of the student will be to implement and modify some closure laws (interfacial forces, source terms in the turbulence model) in a CFD code to select between Open-Foam and Ansys Fluent (both are usable at Ifpen).

The student will join a team working on the modelling and the characterization of multiphase flows, including engineers and PhD students.

Required profile

Master 2 level (or last year of engineering school) in fluid Mechanics, chemical engineering, multiphase flows, CFD.
